Benjamin Franklin Eshleman: A Biographical Sketch
2005
Eshelman-Lee. A fascinating saga illuminating the life of Benjamin Franklin Eshleman. As a young man from Pennsylvania with Mennonite ancestry, Eshleman came to New Orleans in the 1850s to work with his uncle’s hardware firm. Immediately, he became enmeshed in New Orleans merchant society. At the onset of the Civil War, Eshleman enlisted at age 30 as a single man with the CSA Battalion Washington Artillery of New Orleans, appointed immediately as Captain to the 4th Company. With the premier light artillery unit of the Civil War, he fought all the way to Appomattox and surrendered with Lee-- by then promoted to Lt. Colonel. Returning to New Orleans, he became an integral fabric of postwar New Orleans business and society, and Christ Church Cathedral. Co-founder of both Louisiana Confederate Veterans and the Washington Artillery Foundation, he was also a member of the Louisiana escort for the re-internment of CSA President Jefferson Davis from New Orleans to Richmond, Virginia in 1893.
